Cookout at the Beach

A picnic at the beach at fort zachary taylor in Key West

One of our great treasures here in Key West is Ft. Zachary Taylor State Park.  It  has beautiful ocean views, a wide beach, large trees and grills and picnic tables scattered throughout the shaded area.  This is a great spot to spend an afternoon with friends, food and drink.

Near one of the grills, we set up a picnic table for food prepping and another table or two to serve as dining tables.

We always take our best table cloths.  On a special occasion,  we even take our best china and silver. If we decide to go at the last minute, we take white plastic reusable plates and cheap utensils that we can get at Fausto’s.

Some basic supplies (in no particular order of importance)

  • Cast iron skillet (or any skillet suitable for the grill)
  • Tongs
  • Wooden spoon
  • Paper towels
  • Damp paper towels
  • Meat thermometer
  • Cutting board
  • Grill brush
  • Garbage bag
  • Hand towel
  • Serving/food prep plates
  • Chef’s knife
  • Meat knife
  • Corkscrew
  • Basting brush
  • Bowl
  • Charcoal
  • Charcoal chimney
  • Lighter
  • Newspaper
  • Salt and pepper
  • Skewers
  • Containers for leftovers
  • Aluminum foil
  • Damp wipes for washing hands
  • Extra leashes for Samson, the pug
  • Dog water bowl
  • Fly screens

We often complain that getting all this together is too much trouble, but once we’re there, we all agree it is so worth it.
