I am not usually completely content in a vegetarian restaurant, but The Café on Southard Street is an exception. Their menu is broad enough to accommodate either true vegan tastes or those of a carnivorous type like me. You will get plenty to eat (the udon bowl, for example, is huge!) and the dishes are very savory, suspending your usual desire for pork belly. The kitchen is creative and open to specific requests, and the atmosphere is modern bohemian. This spot is a locals’ favorite, sprinkled with a few in-the-know visitors. It is steps away from Duval, but you feel hidden away from the mob. Ask about upcoming special events, as they often host guest chefs from across the country.
